Billy Sullivan has been photographing his friends for 30 years as source material for his paintings and drawings. The photographs are a visual diary of his life, capturing the people and scenes around him. Citing Andy Warhol as an liberating influence in art making, Sullivan was on the scene in the late 60s and 70s and onward documenting parties and club scenes, society types as well as the demi-monde of transgender friends and denizens of the artworld.

"Sullivan is a flaneur of his own and other people's entangling affections. Each person in one of his pictures (whether rendered by hand or with a camera) has an aura of being cared about, if not ardently cared for." -Peter Schjeldahl
