IDENTIFICATION DES MARBRES by Jacques Dubarry de Lassale
Éditions H. Vial, 2001, First edition, 303 pp., 10" X 14", Hardcover
Fine
Used since Antiquity for sculpture and architecture, marble has also been used since Louis XIV for the ornamentation of cabinetmaking furniture. The great variety of its colors and the heterogeneous structure of its rock, however, make it difficult to identify the different types of marble, whether old or recent. To facilitate their recognition, this book offers more than 150 samples representative of the quarry from which they are extracted:
- The first part of the work focuses on the geological aspect of the marbles. The history of their extraction and exploitation is then discussed, and in particular their use by carpenters and cabinetmakers from the 17th to the 20th century.
- Then, a large number of samples of the most used marbles are presented in life size (scale 1), which allows them to appreciate their appearance, color and texture.
- For each marble listed, the author provides its exact and commercial domination, its location, its petrography as well as its remarkable uses.
- The work allows you to admire a wide variety of rock structures (breccias, morello cherries, concretions, veined marbles, brocatelles, lumachelles or shells, single-colored or crystalline marbles) and shades of color, ranging from white marbles to black marbles, through pinks, greens and reds.
This book, which has become a great classic, will interest art lovers, decorators, marble workers and cabinetmakers, but also antique dealers, experts and auctioneers, as well as archaeologists and museum curators.
