Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922) was one of the luminaries of the Arts and Crafts movement in England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful: A Tract on Calligraphy, Printing and Illustration & on the Book Beautiful as a Whole, Cobden-Sanderson applies core aesthetic tenets of the Arts and Crafts movement to the printed book and argues that the beauty of a book arises from its various components—literary content, writing, printing, illustrations, and binding—and their collective interaction.
This is one of 150 copies designed, hand-set & printed by Wesley B. Tanner at the Arif Press between April 14, 1981 and May 7, 1982.
